Fort Buchanan Basketball League Crowns New Champion as Community Engagement Grows

FORT BUCHANAN, Puerto Rico — The Puerto Rico Air National Guard’s 156th Wing basketball team, the Aim High Ballers, recently defeated the Shinigami team 77-74 to capture the 2026 Fort Buchanan Summer Jam Basketball League championship at the installation’s Physical Fitness Center, concluding eight weeks of competition that brought together military personnel, federal employees and community members through sports.

Fort Buchanan’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation program organized the tournament to promote physical fitness, sportsmanship and camaraderie while strengthening relationships among military organizations and the broader installation community.

Six teams participated, representing organizations including the U.S. Coast Guard, Army Reserve, Puerto Rico National Guard and sponsored community groups. The league also featured Joint Forces, a team composed of players from different organizations.

The championship delivered a thrilling finish as Derick Osorio sank two free throws in the closing minutes to help the Aim High Ballers secure their three-point victory. Osorio led all scorers with 29 points and earned the league’s Most Valuable Player award, while teammate Luis Gabriel Tapia contributed 23 points.

For Tapia, who joined the team late in the regular season, the experience extended beyond basketball.

“This was my first tournament with the team. I joined near the end of the regular season after my friend Rafael Martínez invited me,” Tapia said in Spanish. “The guys welcomed me and made me feel comfortable with the group.”

The tournament reflected Fort Buchanan’s role as more than a military installation, providing opportunities for service members, civilian employees, families and community participants to connect through shared interests.

“Basketball is one of our most popular sports. It’s part of our community,” said Roberto Fernández, Fort Buchanan’s business operations and community recreation officer.

Although admission was free and games were open to the public, spectators primarily included families, friends and colleagues who gathered to support their teams.

During the awards ceremony, organizers presented the championship trophy to the Aim High Ballers, introduced the league’s first MVP trophy and recognized both finalist teams with medals.

The basketball league forms part of Fort Buchanan MWR’s year-round recreational sports program, which includes softball, volleyball and flag football when participation permits.

Through programs like Summer Jam, Fort Buchanan continues to provide opportunities that promote wellness, build relationships across military organizations and connect the installation with the community it serves.

Fort Buchanan supports approximately 15,000 military personnel, including active-duty Soldiers, Army Reserve, Puerto Rico National Guard, Marine Corps Reserve and Navy Reserve members. The installation’s mission is to enable readiness and facilitate the deployment of forces anytime, anywhere.
